How CBD Supports Eczema
How CBD Supports Eczema
Eczema is widely understood as an inflammatory skin condition that also involves a weakened skin barrier. When the barrier is compromised, the skin becomes more reactive, more uncomfortable, and more vulnerable to irritation.
Eczema-prone skin is often associated with higher levels of Staphylococcus aureus, a type of bacteria that has been extensively studied in relation to eczema flare patterns. Supporting the skin environment matters, not just moisturizing it.
This salve was formulated with that understanding in mind. Alongside slow-infused whole-plant botanicals, it contains a very small, intentional amount of Oil of Thieves. Thieves oil has been studied for its antibacterial properties, and in my experience, this balanced inclusion plays an important role in why this formula works well for so many families.
The key is not strength or intensity. It is balance. A slow infusion process, careful dilution, and barrier-supportive oils allow the skin to calm, settle, and restore without being overwhelmed.
This is not about masking symptoms. It is about supporting the skin so it can function more comfortably.
Not all CBD is equal. Water-soluble CBD is processed into smaller particles, allowing for more efficient absorption and consistent interaction within the upper layers of the skin where inflammatory responses begin.

Let’s Clear Things Up...
Is CBD skincare safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
There’s a lot of debate around CBD use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and while some doctors support internal use of THC-free CBD for things like nausea or sleep, research is still limited. What we can confidently say is that Mamas Medicinals products are used topically and do not enter the bloodstream—which greatly reduces concern compared to internal use.
Our formulas are crafted with gentle, virtually edible ingredients, many of which are traditionally used for sensitive skin and nursing moms. While we believe they are safe and many of our customers have used them during pregnancy and breastfeeding, every body is different. Please consult your healthcare provider before use to make the best choice for you and your baby.

Is CBD Healing Salve safe for kids?
This is one of the most common questions I get, and I wish there were a simple yes or no answer. I’ve personally used the Healing Salve on my own children, but CBD is a personal decision for every family. Because of the mixed information online, I always recommend consulting with a healthcare provider and doing what feels right for your child.
What’s important to understand is that our CBD is used topically, not ingested, and does not enter the bloodstream the way oral CBD does.
What age can children use the Healing Salve?
There is no official age guideline for topical CBD products. Many parents choose to use the Healing Salve on young children, while others prefer to wait or opt for a non-CBD option. If you’re unsure, I recommend speaking with your healthcare provider and starting with a patch test.
For parents who prefer to avoid CBD altogether, I created our Baby Balm, which is made without CBD or essential oils.
Does topical CBD enter the bloodstream?
Topical CBD works on the surface layers of the skin and does not enter the bloodstream the way ingestible CBD does. Our salve is applied externally to support irritated or inflamed skin.
What should I know about essential oils in this salve?
In our Healing Salve, we use a very small amount of Oil of Thieves within a slow-infused, oil-based formula.
In my experience helping families over the years, this essential oil blend is part of why the salve works for so many people. Eczema-prone skin is often associated with higher levels of Staphylococcus aureus, and Oil of Thieves has been studied for its antibacterial properties.
What matters most is using the right amount of essential oils. Our formula is highly diluted and supported by whole-plant botanicals to keep it gentle and balanced.
Should I do a patch test before using it on my child?
Yes — always. Before using any new product on a child, especially on sensitive or eczema-prone skin, apply a small amount to a patch of skin and wait 24 hours to check for any sensitivity.
Can Healing Salve be used on eczema?
The Healing Salve was originally created to help soothe my daughter’s eczema when she was a toddler. Many customers use it for eczema-prone skin, itching, and flare-ups. However, eczema can look different for every child, and results vary. This product is not intended to diagnose or treat medical conditions.
Is the Healing Salve better than steroid creams?
I can’t compare or replace medical treatments, but I can share my experience. What didn’t feel right for me was the long-term use of steroid creams on a 4-year-old. That’s why I turned to plants and created a botanical alternative. Every family’s situation is different, and I encourage parents to work with their healthcare provider.
What’s the difference between Healing Salve and Baby Balm?
The Healing Salve contains topical CBD and essential oils and is often used by children and adults
The Baby Balm was created for parents who prefer a CBD-free option. It contains 15 nutrient-rich botanicals and is made without CBD or essential oils, making it ideal for babies and very sensitive skin.
Can I use Baby Balm for eczema too?
Yes. Baby Balm was originally made for diaper rash and newborn skin, but many families use it for eczema, cradle cap, chapped skin, baby acne, bug bites, and general skin irritation.
Is the Healing Salve scented?
The Healing Salve has a very light, natural scent from a small amount of an essential oil blend called Thieves Oil.
Thieves Oil is a traditional botanical blend known for its antiseptic, antiviral, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties. In our salve, it’s used intentionally at a homeopathic level — well under 0.1% of the total formula.
This extremely low concentration is very different from products that rely on essential oils for fragrance and is gentle enough for eczema-prone and sensitive skin, including children.
Based on years of use and feedback, I also believe this small amount of Thieves Oil may be one of the keys to why the salve is so effective for eczema, helping support compromised skin while keeping irritation-causing microbes in check.
What about CBD taken internally for kids?
Internal (oral) use of CBD is a very different conversation than topical skincare, especially when it comes to children.
I don’t provide guidance on internal CBD use for kids, but for parents who want to learn more from a trusted, educational source, Project CBD is a nonprofit organization that shares research, case studies, and expert perspectives — including articles discussing oral CBD use in pediatric settings such as epilepsy.
If you’d like to explore that information, Project CBD is a resource I personally trust.
How it all began
Eighteen years ago, I began making a simple salve to soothe my daughter’s severe eczema.
Her skin was inflamed and reactive, and I was searching for something gentle for daily use without steroids. I turned to herbs, oils, and slow infused botanicals and began formulating at home.
That original recipe became our Healing Salve. It is still made today with the same intention, to support the skin barrier and comfort dry, eczema prone skin with a steroid free option parents feel good using daily.

CBD Skincare for Kids, Explained
Parents often have questions about using CBD skincare on children. We created a clear, educational resource to explain how our Healing Salve is used, what topical CBD does (and doesn’t do), and how to decide what’s right for your family.
Our goal is to offer transparency, not pressure, so you can make an informed choice with confidence.

After 8 Days of Consistent Use
Bianca began applying the Healing Salve while keeping her daughter’s routine simple and minimizing soap.
Within the first week, visible redness on her face calmed and her skin looked more comfortable. Wrists and ankles improved more gradually.
Every child is different. This reflects one family’s experience.
